Academics Turned Techno

At the Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) Academic Support Center, there are many offerings. Faculty Member, Annette Skov works at the Tutoring Center and discusses the many new and different sections of subject areas and courses.  Although it was built in 2004, it has become modern with many computers. In the early years, there were large, stationary computer monitors. Construction began and walls were demolished to make more space for incoming computers and the location of Somerset Hall was created with only one main entrance. The Academic Support Center was originally manned by 20 tutors who work part time. Now, there are 35 tutors on staff. Annette Skov claims there are now “less books, and more of the current ones shelved” since the computers have taken up space and the technology provides a faster rate of accuracy than the printed form of information. The Academic Support Center has become so expansive that Skov said “there are now four rooms: two on one side for Math and two on the other for English”.  I especially appreciate the Academic Support Center for tutoring assistance and as a quiet location to take my tests and quizzes.

Video Games Cause Violence

Not Child’s Play Teen and young adult video gaming is becoming more popular as high-tech has streamlined so that interactive games can appear on all screen devices. Since gaming is available 24 hours a day, high exposure can lead to obsessive playing and engagement. The growing controversial claim that violence is learned leaves us needing to know where this brutality is being taught or observed so that we can re-teach gaming enthusiasts, to reduce their escalated thoughts, which can lead to barbaric actions. Teens and young adults are more likely to act out in violence when obsessively playing video games that are violent in nature. One reason for the obsessive behaviors in gaming is that the player is in search of shock value; once the initial shock of violence is accepted, the gamer generally looks for games that out-do the previous violence they have become desensitized to by compulsively playing. The Whole Child The working relationship between Anita Albers and Nina Marvi of the Albrook Montessori School in Bernards Township, New Jersey, can easily be compared to the strong working history that developed between Maria Montessori and Lakshmi Kripalani in 1946. Maria Montessori founded her style of teaching out of necessity. She supported a new approach to teaching that would keep children in an educational environment that was clean and organized and would encourage the children to learn independently. Montessori traveled to India where she taught her techniques to Kripalani, who opened her own Montessori learning center in India in 1947. She soon moved to the United States and began a Montessori movement in New Jersey.
