Kristaps Porziņģis Interview

Image
Who would have known that while working hard in my Writing for the Media college course, I would have the interview of my life. I had been attending the Knick’s vs. Milwaukee Bucks basketball game at Madison Square Garden on February 6, 2018 when my name suddenly appeared on the scoreboard screen as the winner of the “Up Close and Personal” floor seat at the foul line. Along with my win came the opportunity to interview a player of my choosing at the end of the game. Every person who was seated in my section, in front of the handrail, was invited to the floor when the final score was called. But what would follow was a miracle for me even though it was a very unfortunate situation. Knick’s Forward-Center, Kristaps Porziņģis, born in Liepāja, Latvia, took a bad fall that would halt his career. Immediately after the fall that sent him flying over the foul line, a group of professionals huddled the fallen player and the game was put on hold. Within seconds, I was asked to j...

Dogs rescued in Tennessee

Image
NY Post September 17, 2018 The NY Post is calling Tony Alsup a hero. Tony Alsup from Tennessee has been nicknamed the driver of "Noah's Ark on wheels since he drove a school bus into the brunt of Hurricane Florence in search of animal rescue. Even with the storm predictions, Alsup drove in and dove in. In total, the 51 year old man is credited for saving 53 dogs and 11 cats. Even though people could not believe he would risk his own life in search of four-legged felines and canines, he said "I love it". He has a huge heart and reported that "people don't believe me, they say it's got to be barking crazy. But no. They know I'm the Alpha dog and I'm not here to hunt them." Rescue shelters across the South placed Facebook posts about the rescue operation of the animals others would not take. Alsup reminds us that "it's so easy for people to adopt the small pets and the cuties and the cuddly. We take on the one s that deserv...

Mai Day! Drone!

Image
As part of the requirements for my Digital Video Production Certification, I spent my summer internship at Mai Day Productions. I worked daily in the studio and in the field for owner, Patrick DJamoos. Patricks. If I learned one thing from Patrick, it’s that he is passionate about college and high school school sporting events. Mai Day Productions shoots game footage for much of central New Jersey.  Patrick enjoys working with his professional drone camera where photos and video can be taken live and up close when the lens is in focus for long range. Patrick attended Immaculata High School, and his team spirit is clear to see in his film and video capture. On the lacrosse field, Patrick can align the drone above the goal where it will catch each player’s move and yet remain unnoticed. His shots are often of a vantage point that other photographers cannot shoot because he is the assigned photographer with clearance for drone footage. Following the games, Patrick submits his work f...

Academics Turned Techno

Image
At the Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) Academic Support Center, there are many offerings. Faculty Member, Annette Skov works at the Tutoring Center and discusses the many new and different sections of subject areas and courses.  Although it was built in 2004, it has become modern with many computers. In the early years, there were large, stationary computer monitors. Construction began and walls were demolished to make more space for incoming computers and the location of Somerset Hall was created with only one main entrance. The Academic Support Center was originally manned by 20 tutors who work part time. Now, there are 35 tutors on staff. Annette Skov claims there are now “less books, and more of the current ones shelved” since the computers have taken up space and the technology provides a faster rate of accuracy than the printed form of information. The Academic Support Center has become so expansive that Skov said “there are now four rooms: two on one side for Math an...

Summer Blog

Over the summer I took a very exciting internship at a local production company called Mai Day Productions in Somerville.  I learned a lot. A typical day included Go-Pros, drones and camera settings. Drone I have been working on my video edits on interviews, sports events and animals.  Patrick Djamoos, founder of Mai Day Productions, showed me how to add music, clips, transitions and effects. I interviewed Betty Epple about her battle of cancer. I asked questions and she had a wonderful outlook on her motivation to survive. On July 14, 2018, I went to the Miku-Expo concert with my friend David Eng and his little cousin in New York.  We arrived at the Hammerstein Ballroom around 4:00 pm and David and his cousin went to the VIP section while I waited on the normal line.  My friends went in the building and I waited for more than two hours.  When we got inside the building, the crowd was loud.  Everyone is happy, glow-lights were waving and t...

Theater Club story

September 13, 2018 Another interesting booth I visited at RVCC on September 13, 2018, was the Professional Theater Club booth, run by Cara Morris. Cara is a very enthusiastic student who clearly loves the theater. She was happy to tell me that “students pay half price for world class events” at RVCC.  Since the quality of the shows and entertainment are at such a high standard, people from all of New Jersey and the tri-state area come to see the shows at RVCC. Shows appear throughout the year and seasonally, such as the Nutcracker in the winter. Cara said that “people around the world perform”, which is why RVCC has become so popular.  Example areas of entertainment include dance, comedy, puppetry, youth and family events and sensory friendly shows for children and adults with special needs. With a two-level theater that seats 984 people, Cara claims there will be a fun time for all who attend.

Second Language Preference

On September 13, 2018, I visited the Raritan Valley Community College Spirit Day Picnic.  There were many booths set up on the grounds with volunteers to exhibit the various clubs and great activities at RVCC.  I was excited to find that our school has an ESL (English Second Language) Club , run by Luong Ngo .  Luong said that " people come to the U.S. to improve their English ".  Luong is an Asian background, and I found it very interesting since my family speaks Mandarin at Home.  With my broken English family, this kind of club can be very important.  The club was created in the Spring of 2018 .  Luong enjoys how the community " shares experiences and learns about American culture" through the club.  The ESL Club meets in one of the rooms in the conference center .
What the heck is that?  I was sleeping around 7:00 in the morning when I heard a loud noise that woke me up.  I looked at my window and saw nothing, so I went back to bed.  two hours later, another sound appeared and it was coming from outside.  I checked my window again, there was a cruise ship at the docks.  To me the ship can hold two hundred people and it is setting sail to the Caribbeans.  I was getting tired already, so I'll just forget about it and eat breakfast.
